During this 15-day tour, you will discover the most famous monuments and « quartiers » in Paris; you will visit the Louvre and Orsay museums and the Versailles château with specialist guides. You will go to the Somme and to Normandy with specialist guides to discover the battlefields of the two World Wars as well as the house of Claude Monet; then you will discover the celebrated Bayeux Tapestry and stay in St Malo, a city famous for its pivateers and its fortifications built by Vauban in the 17th century. You will then go to the Mont St Michel and to Rennes – the capital of Brittany – and visit Carnac and its remarkable megalithic sites, as well as enjoy a cruise on the Gulf of the Morbihan. Finally you will discover some of the chateaux in the Loire Valley, including Leonardo da Vinci’s home, before returning to Roissy airport.

Day 1 – Paris

  • Morning : Early morning arrival at Roissy CDG Airport
    Welcome by France Heritage Travel Team. Coach transfer to hostel in historical centre of Paris for 4 nights.
    Group breakfast organised by France Heritage Travel.
    Walk to the Ile de la Cité to look at Notre-Dame cathedral as it is now and Booked entry to the Sainte Chapelle, the absolute jewel of the 13th century Gothic architecture.

  • Afternoon : Discover the Latin Quarter, the Luxembourg Palace and Gardens
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 2 - Paris

  • Morning : Booked entry and guided visit of the Musée du Louvre.
    After the visit take the group to have a look at « La Comédie Française » and « les jardins duPalais Royal ».

  • Afternoon : Booked entry to the Arc de Triomphe.
    Time to discover the Champs Elysées.
    Direct metro to Place de la Concorde to see the perspectives and the architecture of the Assemblée Nationale and on the other side, the Rue Royale and the Madeleine church.
    Dinner and Night in hostel.

Day 3 - Paris

  • Morning : Booked entry to the Eiffel Tower.
    Later in the morning to Versailles.

  • Afternoon : Booked entry and audioguides for the visit of the Château de Versailles and then time to visit the gardens.
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 4 - Paris

  • Morning : Visit of Montmartre.

  • Après-midi : Choice between :
    – Guided visit of the Musée d’Orsay
    – Booked entry to the Catacombes (the old Roman quarries used to build Lutèce = Paris and in the Middle Ages used to store the bones dug up from cemeteries).
    Early dinner.

  • Evening :  Cruise on the River Seine.
    Night in hostel

Day 5 - Paris-Amiens

  • Morning : Leave Paris by coach to Amiens (2 nights).

  • Afternoon :  Guided visit of Amiens cathedral  (World Heritage) The largest gothic cathedral in France.
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 6 - Somme

  • Whole day visiting the Somme Battlefields with a specialist guide.

    All the nations who took part in these endless battles have very moving and unforgettable monuments and cemeteries (the British, the Canadians, the South Africans, the Irish, the Indians etc.. but also a very moving Newfoundland Park and Museum).                                             
    Welcome to the Musée Franco-Australien, Villers-Bretonneux

    Though many New-Zealanders fought and are buried in the Somme, on Day 7, New- Zealand groups could go direct to be welcomed in Le Quesnoy (town twinned with Cambrige New-Zealand) and then via Arras to visit the tunnels dug by New-Zealanders and then go direct to the hostel near Caen (instead of visiting Giverny and Rouen).

Day 7 - Giverny and Rouen

  • Morning : Leave Amiens by coach for Giverny and visit Monet’s house, beautiful garden and water lilies.

  • Afternoon : Guided visit of the historical centre of Rouen.
    By coach to hostel near Caen (2 nights).

Day 8 - Normandy

  • Whole day guided by specialist guide: D Day : The Normandy landing. 6th June 1944. From Utah and Omaha to Juno and Sword beach.

  • End afternoon booked entry to Cinema 360° in Arromanches.
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 9 - Normandy and Brittany

  • Morning to Bayeux : Booked visit at the Bayeux Tapestry (audioguides). Made in 1070 to celebrate the conquest of Britain by William the Conqueror in 1066 (68 metres long/50cm wide).

  • Afternoon : To Saint Malo youth hostel (2 nights).
    Guided visit of the town of Saint Malo. (In Saint Malo, you are back at the time of the « Corsaires » (Privateers) 16th and 17th centuries. The walls surrounding this spectacular town were started in the 12th century).
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 10 - Normandy and Brittany

  • Morning : To the Mont St Michel

    Guided visit of the Mont Saint Michel. Not only one of the most famous World Heritage sites in France but also unforgettable because of its architecture and unique setting.

  • Later in the afternoon : return to St Malo for a two hour boat cruise to discover the bay of St Malo.
    Dinner and night in hostel

Day 11 - Brittany

  • Morning : from St Malo to Rennes.
    Short guided visit of Rennes, the capital of Brittany.

  • Afternoon : From Rennes to Vannes.
    Settle in Vannes youth hostel (2 nights).
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 12 - Brittany

  • Morning : To go and visit Carnac one of the most important megalithic sites (4000 standing menhirs) dating back to 4500 BC.

    Then visit another remarkable megalithic site (Dolmens, tombs, etc..) Locmariaquer, an old village guarding the entrance of the Morbihan gulf and enjoying a remarkable view over the whole gulf.

  • Afternoon : Boat cruise across the beautiful golfe du Morbihan.

Day 13 - The Loire Valley

  • From Vannes to Amboise via Angers (the town of the Plantagenets).
    Lunch stop and visit of the impressive château dating back to the 13th century.
    Then to Amboise hostel (2 nights).               
    Dinner and night in hostel.

Day 14 - The Loire Valley

  • Morning :  Visit of the Clos Lucé (Leonardo DA VINCI’s last residence. The copies of most of his inventions can be discovered in the house and gardens).

  • Afternoon : Guided visit of the Château d’Amboise (one of the main royal châteaux in gothic and Renaissance style with a fabulous view over the Loire. Da Vinci is buried in its chapel).
    Dinner and night in hostel

Day 15 - From Amboise to Roissy-CDG Airport

  • Morning : Leave hostel with luggage for Roissy-CDG.
    10h : Booked entry to visit the Château de Chenonceau (with booklets). It is most people’s favourite Château, astride the lovely river Cher.
    Then to the Château de Chambord  via the road along the river Loire.

  • Afternoon : Booked visit of the Château.
    By coach to Roissy-CDG Airport for late flight.
